The Drolshagen region is part of the Sauerland Rothaargebirge Nature Park, a tranquil, wooded low mountain range landscape. 57 small villages, some of which are picturesquely embedded in nature, belong to the town of Drolshagen. Of these, Essinghausen was awarded the title of state gold village and in 1998 the title of national silver village. Numerous paths lead along babbling brooks through lovely meadows up to the heights. The wide views over valleys and mountains, on clear days as far as the Siebengebirge, the fresh air, birdsong in summer or the silence of the winter landscape capture the senses and make the Drolshagen countryside unforgettable. In 2022, Drolshagen was awarded the status of a resort.
The Drolshagen region has a lot to offer hikers. Around 140 km of well-signposted hiking trails marked by the SGV open up a varied area. An emergency number with coordinates on all hiking signs ensures safety.
Cyclists can also discover a lot here. Four circular cycle routes through the Drolshagen region and the "Agger-Bigge Runde" are available free of charge as a map from the Drolshagen Citizens' Office. The history of Drolshagen
On March 2, 1477, the Archbishop of Cologne, Ruprecht von der Pfalz, raised the freedom of Drolshagen to the status of a town and gave it a wall and market. In May 1838, Drolshagen burned down completely except for a few buildings. The winding little town was then rebuilt with straight streets and right-angled street junctions. Today's town center is a testimony to this period.
The market square
The market square was created after the fire of 1838 and was given its current design in 1991. The fountain in the middle is a reminder of nodal points in the town's history, linked to four sayings by the mystic Angelus Silesius (1624-1677). After the town fire, only wealthy citizens were able to settle on the market square and along the main street. The further away the building plots on the streets leading from here, the more modest the new buildings were when they were rebuilt. The house on the corner of Annostraße/Kirchplatz, which houses a restaurant, is one of the first stone buildings in Drolshagen. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Until then, there were only half-timbered buildings with mud walls.
