The Biggetal dam was built on the outskirts of the town of Attendorn in the 1960s. Its main purpose is to store and release water as required, thus ensuring a steady flow of water in the Ruhr. The reservoir can release up to 40 percent of the required supply water from all reservoirs into the Ruhr river system via the Bigge and Lenne rivers.

But how does it all work? What happens in the event of flooding? Guests can find out this and much more during a guided tour around the Biggedamm. At the beginning, visitors are shown a short information film in the visitor pavilion below the lighthouse. A tour guide then gives an insight into the structures and their function and explains the highly complex technical processes in a clear and understandable way.
