The Kierspe Museum Route is approx. 18 km long and takes approx. 1 hour.

At the starting point of the tour is the Bakelitmuseum in the Altes Amtshaus. Visitors will be amazed and learn lots of interesting facts about the development of the Bakelite industry. The museum's lovingly compiled collection includes many typical Bakelite objects, such as the famous old black telephones.

The Old Town Hall, where the museum is now housed, used to be the seat of the municipal administration and then the town council until 1986. The mighty staircase, which gives the building its characteristic appearance, is striking.

The Bakelitmuseum is open on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.; further appointments are available for groups by appointment: heimatverein@kierspe.de

Author Tip

The Schleiper Hamm is located directly on the route. The Schleiper Hamm is a former factory and is now used as a museum. The museum showcases the tradition of wide goods forging in the upper Volmetal in the 1930s. On special occasions, the machines in the Schleiper Hamm are switched on. You can still see how Bakelite is processed today. Bakelite is the first industrially produced plastic. The technical industrial monument shows the former hammer plant with turbine drive, transmission and spring hammer. The outdoor facilities with the two operating ponds and the shape of the building have been preserved in their original form to this day. The development of the Bakelite industry is documented in the upper part of the hammer mill. The outside of the plant can be visited at any time.
The Schleiper Hamm is open to visitors from April to October on the first Wednesday of every month from
10 am to 3 pm. Guided tours for groups are possible by prior arrangement with the local history association: heimatverein@kierspe.de
