The rediscovery of the old Heidenstraße as a Way of St. James pilgrimage route for the section between Oberkirchen and Attendorn leads through over a thousand years of Christian history and at the same time represents the cultural heritage at the heart of the former Electorate of Cologne Sauerland.
Being on the road alone is not enough.
Setting out consciously at some point,
reaching your destination fulfilled at some point,
that's what makes sense"
(Carola Matthiesen).
Pilgrims and, of course, anyone interested in history and local history can prepare themselves for the "Heidenstraße experience" with the book "Wandern und Pilgern auf der Heidenstraße" (Hiking and Pilgrimages on the Heidenstraße), published by the Sauerland Heimatbund and written by Annemarie and Herbert Schmoranzer and Franz-Norbert Scheele from the "Heidenstraße" project group. On a good one hundred pages, pilgrims and hikers are given a reliable and interesting guide in a handy format, which is rounded off with extensive maps and remarkable photographs.
